5 Creative Holiday Activities in Portland

December 11th, 2015

You can feel it in the air…Christmas is coming and we are counting down! Here are some super fun outside-the-box activities to do around town with loved ones.

1. Ugly Christmas Sweater Photo Shoot

Hit up a thrift store asap and get an ugly Christmas sweater before they’re all gone. If they don’t have the tackiness you crave, buy a sweater and deck it out with bells, ribbons, pom poms, basically anything that screams holidays. Then most importantly get dolled up and do a photo shoot. Either go to a photo studio (check online for coupons first), visit your local mall or department store Santa, or make a wrapping paper backdrop with props and go crazy with your own camera!

2. Check out Portland’s Yarn-Bombed Statues

A group of knitting devotees worked their hearts out by creating yarn masterpieces to cover and keep the statues warm during this chilly season. We can’t help but squeal with delight at how cute they are! And we even caught an elusive yarn-bomb fairy in action working on one of our favorites: the otters covered in little Christmas tree outfits with a yellow star on top…only in Portland.

3. Build a Snowless Snowman

Whether we have snow or not, get creative and make a snowman! We haven’t seen snow in Portland during the holidays in a few years, but we thought of a solution. Scrounge up anything around your house that you would consider snowman-worthy and start stacking. It could be clothes, kitchen items, recyclables, or anything you creative thinkers can come up with. You will be the talk of the neighborhood and may even inspire others to create their own snowman as well!

4. Drive, Bike, or Walk Around Finding the Best Christmas Lights

What’s more fun than cruising around town with friends searching for the best decked out houses in town…maybe doing that while also blasting the Mariah Carey holiday station and eating Chinese Food! Vote on houses based on a few categories such a quantity of lights, creativity, theme, etc. You might even get some ideas stirring for your own home.

5. See a Christmas Show in Town

Why not take the family to see a holiday show?! There are so many of them in Portland. If you want the classic take of A Christmas Carol go to Portland Playhouse. Or if you want something poking fun at it, check out Twist Your Dickens at Portland Center Stage. We have seen both and they are amazing! Another show on our must-see list is the Oregon Symphony performing the music from Home Along, while the movie plays on a huge screen! This movie brings back so many memories, especially for you 90s kids, and seeing the music performed live is going to be a real treat!

Don’t forget, we have daily tours, even on Christmas day! Get your tickets at portlandwalkingtours.com or call 503-774-4522 to get them today.
