Area theater roaring with new shows

February 24th, 2012

“Wicked,” the musical by Steven Schwartz based on the Gregory Maguire novel of the same name, has obtained significant publicity for its upcoming blast through Portland next month. And it’s a great show, definitely worth seeing. It’s strong evidence that Portland is on the map theater-wise and on the radar for national companies seeking enthusiastic audiences for live performance.

But it’s not the only show in town. Portland’s local theater scene is bursting with new shows, some opening in the next few weeks, at venues both large and small, including:

  • “Let’s Murder Marsha” at North End Players’ Bert Mann Theater, opening tonight
  • “Red” opens at Portland Center Stage tonight
  • HipBone Studio opens two shows tonight for a one-weekend run:  “Please Disturb” and “Bag of Hammers”
  • Club Morocco” opened last night on Stumptown Stages for a two-weekend-only run
  • Harvey” opens tonight to open the season for Beaverton Civic Theater
  • Several shows close this weekend, including “Docent” at CoHo Theater, “Orphans” at Offshoot Theater, “Boleros for the Disenchanted” at Milagro, and “Sense and Sensibility” at Magenta Theater
  • Shameless self-promotion alert: Across the river in little old Vancouver – yes, there is theater in “The Couv” – next Friday, the world premier of “Happy Anniversary” by yours truly opens.

With literally dozens of live theater companies and venues in the greater metro area, the opportunities to see professionally produced fresh work of all kinds are boundless. Check it out. It’s what helps make Portland great. (And sitting in a theater is a great way to relax after a fun afternoon walking tour!)
