Creating Culture in Portland

January 11th, 2011

One of Portland’s many cultural attractions is its vibrant theater scene. In addition to our central mainstage equity theaters and companies such as Portland Center Stage and Artists Repertory Theater, and the many off-broadway shows that appear at the Keller Auditorium, Portland boasts some 30+ community theaters and a lively original theater scene. Some companies perform reliable standards for the most part. Others, such as Hand2Mouth Theater, perform only original work.

Next week, original theater takes center stage with the third annual Fertile Ground Festival of New Work. From January 20-30, 2011, fifty brand-new scripts will take to the stage on venues all over town, ranging from dramatic readings of works in progress to fully staged world premieres. All varieties of stage performance will expand Portland’s cultural horizons, from dramas and comedies to musicals and dance.

This event is the only one of its kind in the country. We are lucky to live in a place where the residents and guests celebrate and support innovation, creativity, and risk-taking.
