Earth Day in Portland

Earth Day, April 22, fast approaches. What will you do to help celebrate and return the love Mother Nature gives us?

Here are some ideas:

  • Urban Earth Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Monument Square, Portland. Enjoy local, organic food; compost demonstrations; dance, art and music, from 30 organizations; and more.
  • South Portland Earth Day Cleanup, Saturday, registration 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and cleanup 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Mill Creek Park. Make Portland even more beautiful!
  • City Repair, April 23, 10AM-7PM, Washington High School (SE 12th & Stark). Over a dozen live musical performances with a Green Theme, community art and performances, a bike parade and a fun Sprout Farm” for the kids.
  • Earth Day Hike, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sebago Lake Ecology Center, at the intersection of Routes 237 and 35, Standish. Free, ages 7+. Get your heart pumping!
  • Papa G’s Earth Day Event/Show: The Vegan deli will be dishing out samples and offering specials and giveaways; entertainment includes Andrew Orr and Jen Howard plus Legend Michael Hurley. Sat., April 16 2314 SE Division Street.
  • Portland State University Fourth Annual Earth Day Festival: Celebrate Earth Day at the South Park Blocks behind the Smith Student Union with food vendors, musical guests, student groups, and nonprofit groups. Fri., April 22. Free. 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. See website for directions.
  • Walk or bike to these events. In fact, walk to wherever you need to go – not just this Friday, but every day, as often as you can. It’s good for Mother Nature  – and for your own Nature, too.
