Gift your Swift On!

September 26th, 2011

One more week to take in Swift Watch 2011. The Audubon Society of Portland has been hosting Swift Watch since September 1st.  If you aren’t in the know about the sifts, they’ve become something of a Portland tradition. The swifts in question are Vaux’s Swifts, a small migratory social insect-eating bird. As they migrate south they choose roosting locations where they can gather in large groups. Since the 1980s, one of those roosting locations has been the chimney at Chapman Elementary (1445 NW 26th Ave). At sunset the swifts will begin to gather circling the chimney before plunging down in mass to roost. It’s free and open to all… and pretty spectacular. You can find more information on the Audubon Society of Portland’s website: http://audubonportland.org/local-birding/swiftwatch.
