Here We Come A-Caroling! Free Caroling Events Abound in Downtown Portland

December 9th, 2015

Thanksgiving is behind us, and you know what that means . . . we are officially and unapologetically letting ourselves get swept up in Portland’s holiday spirit. Between the majestic Christmas tree in Pioneer Courthouse Square, the lights decorating the shops downtown, the sweater bombing of beloved statues, and the general good cheer that is all around, we’ve got a feeling you’re in the holiday spirit too. On the off chance that you’re not, we wanted to let you know about something pretty wonderful that is guaranteed to put a festive smile on your face — free caroling events in downtown Portland all through December! So put on your best ugly Christmas sweater and join the fun.

Pioneer Courthouse Square Events

Pioneer Courthouse Square is featuring many local groups singing your favorite holiday tunes in their Atmospherics Program all month long. Check the schedule to find out when each group will be performing, but for the most part you can catch performances most days December 9th through the 21st from 12:00-1:00 PM or 5:00-6:00 PM. A smorgasbord of talented professional, non-professional, and school groups will be performing, including Laurelhurst School Chorus, Cappella Romana, Sugarplum Elves, Vernon School Choir, Cascade Harmony Chorus, Lincoln High School Choir, Cleveland High School Choir, Beverly Cleary School Choir, Buckman Chorus, and Sing Portland!

Figgy Pudding Caroling Contest

On Friday December 11 between 5:30-7:30 PM you can experience something truly unique: the Figgy Pudding Caroling Contest. Are you ready for this? Here’s how it works: you grab a free cup of hot cocoa in Pioneer Courthouse Square at 5:30 PM, listen to more than a dozen caroling groups strolling along SW Morrison and SW Yamill streets vying to entertain you between 6:00 and 7:00 PM, and then back in the Square at 7:15 PM you will applaud your favorite group(s) in a sing off. Yes that’s right: your applause will help decide which group goes home the winner. With a grand prize of $1,000, you know you are going to be hearing some serious caroling! Click here for all the details.

Holidays on the Mall

The Holidays on the Mall celebration is also livening up downtown with free caroling events. Times and groups are as follows. We think they are all worth a listen!

December 13 from 1:00-2:00 PM – The Fireside Carolers at SW 5th and SW 6th Avenues

December 17 from 5:00-6:00 PM – Without Apology all male a capella group at SW 5th and Morrison

December 19 from 12:00-1:00 PM and 2:00-4:00 PM and December 20 from 12:00-1:00 PM – The Dickens Carolers (Four singers — two men and two women — dressed in Old English costumes hearkening back to 1843, the year that Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol.) at SW Yamhill and SW Morrison streets
