Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Races Are Here Again!

June 10th, 2016

Did you know that Dragon Boat Races have been a part of the Portland Rose Festival since 1989? It’s a no-brainer that this annual cultural event is so popular — the races combine beauty, tradition, athleticism, and exciting competition for all to watch down on the waterfront over a two-day period. And it’s free! Over 80 teams from all over the world participate and you can come any time and catch a four-team heat occurring every nine minutes. The colorful authentic Taiwan-style boats holding 20 paddlers each are provided by the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association which promotes “friendship and understanding between the people of Portland, Oregon and Kaohsiung, Taiwan.” Adding to the anticipation is that local teams have been practicing for 10 weeks leading up to the competition. Wow! We applaud everyone who participates and encourage you to stop by to be a part of something truly spectacular.
