Personalized Pancakes, PB & J Fries, and a 6-Month Wait, Oh My!

October 14th, 2016

We don’t like to brag, and yet sometimes we want to yell it from the rooftops! Here in Portland we sure do love food, and have been nominated numerous times as one of the top ten foodie cities in the country. We literally have every option you can think of from fancy five star restaurants to inexpensive food carts. But some of our favorites are often one-of-a-kind spots that you may not be able to find anywhere else. Check out the list below and head out on a tasty adventure, and remember, we’re just trying to live up to our motto…Keep Portland Weird!

1. Slappy Cakes (4246 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR 97215)

A perfect place to express your creative chops through food. You literally get to cook your own pancakes at your table, with a built in griddle for your batter, and toppings of your choice. They get people of all ages, and special occasions like birthday parties, bachelorette parties, or family reunions are always welcome. Go here and expect to have a blast. Your stomach will thank you!

2. Langbaan (6 SE 28th Ave, Portland, OR 97214)

With a full Thai dining experience, there’s no wonder this spot has a 6-month waiting list. And since they source in-season, local ingredients, you can expect that their menu changes regularly, which is part of the fun of it. One of the coolest things about Langbaan is that it’s located behind another restaurant, so it feels more like you’re entering into a secret lair of culinary excellence. Reserve your seats as soon as possible for this unique experience.

3. Potato Champion (1207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214)

One of America’s favorite foods, french fries, has the starring role here at a food cart in Portland with some of the most unique toppings around. Some of the most popular include poutine, pulled pork, and the most unexpected, the PB & J! Located in one of the hottest neighborhoods, this is perfect for a late night junk food run. Go get your french fry on!

4. Pine State Biscuits (multiple locations)

What started out as a food cart at the farmers market has now become a successful brick and mortar business with various locations focusing on a specific specialty…biscuits topped with delectable local ingredients. One of their most famous has to be “The Reggie,” topped with fried chicken, egg, bacon, and of course an amazing gravy. With warm biscuits made daily and warm welcomes from the staff, you’ll get a true taste of North Carolina where the chefs grew up. Treat yourself!

5. Fire on the Mountain (multiple locations)

Portland food seems to run on the healthy end of the food spectrum, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give into cravings, local ingredients included. Not only does Fire on the Mountain have classic wings with over 15 sauces to choose from, they also have vegan wings for you non meat eaters out there. Dessert? Try their fried Oreo’s and Twinkies – you’ll feel like you died and went to heaven. And lastly if you’re feeling like a daredevil, do the El Jefe’ Challenge where you may literally cry from eating 15 spicy wings in 3 minutes. Good luck!
