Portland Walking Tours

Spoiling for a good walk

September 2nd, 2011

Mark Twain commented that golf was “A good walk, spoiled.” As one who gave up the game in my teens out of sheer frustration, I admire his insight.

Portland is a great walking city – great for tours, hikes, or just walking to work. But some people just can’t be talked out of hitting the links.

Lucky for them, Portland accommodates. Golfnow.com lists no fewer than 23 courses in the greater Portland area (although some of these are, shall we say, well out of walking distance from downtown).

Even luckier, Portland boasts five city-owned public courses, including the award-winning Red Tail, historic Rose City and Eastmoreland (the second oldest course in Oregon), and the sprawling Green and Blue courses at Heron Lakes. Designed and maintained to the highest standards to appeal to the aspiring pro, these courses are nevertheless very affordable for the weekend duffer as well.

So if you care to ignore Mr. Twain’s warning, you have plenty of great options for hitting the links.

Otherwise, we advise you explore Portland’s other great walking options: great downtown walking tours for all ages.
