Spurred by green industry, Portland’s economy surges ahead of nation

Often jokingly referred to as “the place where young people go to retire” (thank you, Portlandia!), Portland’s reputation as a slacker-friendly job market is changing, according to a new report on the region’s economy in Slate.com.

Portland’s unemployment rate, which lagged behind the U.S. throughout much of the last decade – particularly among the 20- and 30-somethings, aka the “Portlandia demographic” – is now a full point better than the U.S. as a whole.

Why? Portland’s green and locavore industries (beer, slow food, sustainable energy) are growing nationally, creating opportunities for job creation as well as exporting “the good word.”
