Christmas Ships Sail into Downtown

December 14th, 2010

A great Portland tradition continues as the Christmas Ships sail into downtown and surrounding areas for your holiday viewing – a great reason to take a stroll downtown.

This is the 56th year for the Christmas Ship Parade on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in Portland and like the previous 55, this one will not disappoint. Some 55-60 ships organized into two fleets sail nightly down our two mighty rivers, providing an in-water viewing spectacle that is not to be missed.

The fleets are all-volunteer, operating out of the kind donations from Portland area hotels and restaurants. Many of these area businesses offer prime viewing locations indoors – particularly handy if the weather turns for the worse.

The sailing ships make for great viewing from downtown Portland, particularly this evening, Tuesday December 14, as they parade down the Willamette from OMSI to the Fremont Bridge starting at 7PM.

For those who prefer the mighty Columbia, stroll along the Marine Drive path as the ships sail from the docks at NE 43rd to I-205 and on to roughly 164th Ave in Vancouver.

The Willamette River Tall Ships Schedule and the Columbia River Tall Ships Schedule are available online. Grab a drinking chocolate or a hot latte and we’ll see you at 7:00!
